Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun on Tuesday said his administration has finalised work on the legal framework for the establishment of a Sports Commission in the state.

Adeleke, who spoke during a ceremony marking the rehabilitation of Osogbo City Stadium, said the commission’s establishment would enhance harmonious development and administration of all sports in the state.

He also said the legal framework for the establishment of a sports trust fund was about to be completed.

The governor said the fund’s establishment was to ensure sustainable sports financing in the state.

“When I came in as the governor of the state, this stadium was in a terrible condition.

“Also, the state of sports in Osun was appalling.

“We, therefore, decided to do some remarkable things that can boost the development of sports in the state.

“So, by the time we finish this development, the stadium will be a beautiful edifice to behold,” he said.

The governor added that his administration’s dream was to build a stadium with capacity to host various events, such as the National Sports Festival (NSF) and National Youth Games (NYG).

“More importantly, we should have a stadium to be able to host some of our national teams, including the Super Eagles,” he said.

Adeleke disclosed that the stadium’s remodeling would not stop at the football pitch alone where there will be three major pitches of international standard.

“It will also have pitches for other games such as volleyball, swimming, handball, hockey, basketball and a host of others.

“The remodeling will also include a befitting indoor sports hall, hostels for the athletes and a state-of-art four-star hotel,” he said.

The governor, who said the project would be completed within 12 months, disclosed that his administration was also paying attention to the welfare of sports men and women.

“Aside from working on infrastructure and policy framework, the welfare of sports men and women is also paramount in our agenda.

“Going forward, our government has decided to reward all athletes who made the state proud at various championships.

“They will be rewarded handsomely based on their level of achievements,” he said.
