Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has voiced frustration after being left off the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

The 23-year-old Brazilian, who played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s success last season, was notably absent from the list released by France Football, Ballon d’Or Ambassador Didier Drogba, and a panel of international sports journalists.

In an interview with ESPN, Rodrygo did not hide his disappointment, stating, “I was upset; I think I deserved it. I don’t want to belittle the players who are there; they deserve it too. But I believe I had a place in the 30.”

Rodrygo suggested that his versatility and frequent role changes within the team might have contributed to his omission from the prestigious list. “Often, I’m just filling spaces,” he explained.

“Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That’s it. It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”

While Rodrygo was overlooked, several of his Real Madrid teammates, including Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and the recently retired Toni Kroos, were nominated for the award.

Despite his exclusion, Rodrygo’s performance last season was pivotal to Real Madrid’s campaign, contributing 17 goals and 9 assists in 51 appearances as the club clinched both the UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles.

The winner of the Ballon d’Or will be announced on October 28.
