Politicians are systematically misinforming President Bola Tinubu about the severity of Nigeria’s economic and security crisis, according to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
Speaking in a viral video, the lawmaker representing Abia North insisted that while the public faces genuine adversity, the President cannot be held responsible for the widespread hardship.
Senator Kalu’s comments follow a recent delegation visit by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where church leaders highlighted deep concerns regarding the nation’s political atmosphere, deteriorating security, and economic instability. Despite Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, revealing that President Tinubu rejected the delegation’s findings and maintained his administration was on course, Kalu strongly backed the religious leaders.
Commending the high-level dialogue, the former Abia State governor praised the bishops for providing the Head of State with an unvarnished account of conditions across the country.
“The Catholic bishops are the conscience of the country,” Kalu remarked, noting that their counsel is offered strictly in the national interest to help any sitting leader see matters clearly.
The lawmaker argued that such direct feedback is vital to counteract the misleading reports provided by political figures. He added: “Even if we politicians can lie to him, the bishops will tell him the truth about the current reality of the country.”
According to Kalu, the candid assessment delivered by the bishops should serve as an impetus for the administration to intensify its efforts, reiterating that “there are real difficulties in Nigeria, but they are not President Tinubu’s fault.”
