Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he opted against taking the club’s iconic number nine jersey, deciding instead to stick with number 45 for the upcoming season.

Following an impressive loan spell, the Super Eagles forward secured a permanent transfer from Napoli last summer, quickly establishing himself as a vital figure and fan favourite at Rams Park.

Given his key role for the Yellow-Reds, highlighted by opening his pre-season goal tally in a recent 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul, many expected the Nigerian international to claim the number nine shirt, a squad number traditionally assigned to elite forwards and associated with Mauro Icardi.

However, the striker chose to retain the number 45 he has worn since moving to Turkey, citing good fortune and personal sentiment.

As reported on Thursday by Turkish outlet Sabah Spor via its X account, Osimhen explained his stance to club officials.

“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I think you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray.”

“I want to continue with the same number.”

Having delivered crucial goals and established himself as an integral part of the team, Osimhen now turns his attention to maintaining his strong form as Galatasaray aim to defend their domestic title and compete on multiple fronts in the new campaign.
