The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has begun interrogating Adeniyi Adeyemi inside police detention over his role in the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
The interrogation, which commenced on Wednesday after an initial morning delay, comes as the scandal continues to widen.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives is scheduled to question several top government figures regarding the council’s appearance in the 2026 budget and its alleged access to official facilities. Those set for legislative questioning include Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, and Accountant-General of the Federation Shamseldeen Ogunjimi.
Investigation into the matter escalated after President Bola Tinubu directed the anti-graft agency to conduct a full-scale probe into the purported council, which the Presidency maintains was never formally created or recognized by the Federal Government.
As part of the expanding inquiry, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila appeared at ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Monday. Following his arrest last week, Adeyemi claimed Gbajabiamila issued him an appointment letter for the Director-General role and alleged he paid money to secure the post. Gbajabiamila, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has strongly denied the claims and filed a lawsuit against Adeyemi.
Wednesday’s session with Adeyemi at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre was temporarily stalled when his new legal counsel failed to arrive for the scheduled 10:00 a.m. start. In line with constitutional provisions, ICPC operatives suspended the process to safeguard the suspect’s statutory right to legal representation.
The interrogation resumed later in the afternoon upon the lawyer’s arrival, focusing heavily on the origin, activities, bank accounts, and forged documentation associated with the unverified body. However, officials were unable to complete the questioning before the end of the day.
Investigators are expected to continue probing Adeyemi as inter-agency coordination between the police and the ICPC deepens.
