Political activities for the upcoming 2027 general election were set to launch following an announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which fixed Wednesday, 19 August 2026, as the official start date.
Ahead of the official campaign kickoff, President Bola Tinubu hosted a series of closed-door discussions at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.
The high-level engagements began early in the evening, with the Information and National Orientation Minister, Mohammed Idris, held in a meeting with the President. Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio pulled up to the forecourt of the President’s office at 6:12 pm in his official S-Class Mercedes sedan.
Later in the evening, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, was seen arriving at the Villa. His visit followed closely on the heels of the 15 August Osun State governorship election, where his successor, Ademola Adeleke, was declared the winner.
Roughly 20 minutes after Oyetola’s arrival, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the representative for Kano State’s Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in the 10th House of Representatives, arrived at the corridor leading to the executive offices at 7:15 pm. Doguwa had come straight from attending the National Peace Committee’s peace accord signing event in Abuja.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, was also spotted at the Villa within the same hour, likely arriving in anticipation of Wednesday’s scheduled Federal Executive Council meeting.
None of the visiting officials addressed reporters at the scene, leaving the precise agendas for the evening’s meetings undisclosed.
