The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, banned the planned procession of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria to commemorate the 2024 Islamic calendar Day of Ashura in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the FCT command, Superintendent of Police, Josephine Adeh, said Police intelligence has it that members of the proscribed organisation, popularly known as Shiite were planning a procession.

The process, the Police said is aimed at marking the 2024 Islamic calendar Day of Ashura.

Adeh noted that antecedents have shown that such activities, carried out by members of IMN often result in significant disturbances, leading to anarchy and chaos within the FCT.

She warned all Shiites or members of the proscribed organisation to refrain from or shun any intended form of protest or procession within the FCT.

According to Adeh, the FCT Command would not hesitate to use every legal means necessary to halt or incapacitate anyone who dares violate the ban by the police.

Adeh also assured that the command is committed to maintaining law and order and would take all necessary measures to prevent any activities that threaten the safety and well-being of the populace.
