The Indigenous People of Biafra, on Tuesday, backed the call for Rivers State to produce the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The separatist group, therefore, rejected the proposition that a former Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro, who is from Imo State, occupy the position.

The office of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo became vacant on July 25, 2024 when Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu died at the age of 82 years.

According to The PUNCH, the Igbo apex sociocultural organisation is currently in search of Iwuanyanwuā€™s successor, with some stakeholders saying it is the turn of Rivers State to produce the next Ohanaeze leader.

Joining the debate on Tuesday, IPOB asserted that for equity’s sake, the next Ohanaeze President-General should come from Rivers State and called on Okiro not to fall for the temptation of contesting the stool.

IPOBā€™s spokesman, in a statement on Tuesday, warned Okiro not to be misled by an alleged endorsement from a faceless group purportedly called ā€œOgbako Egbemaā€ to contest for the leadership of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

Powerful accused influential figures within the Imo State government of orchestrating the endorsement to undermine Okiroā€™s integrity and disrupt Igbo unity.
