The Sokoto Youth Progressive Movement (SYPM) has strongly condemned the display of foreign flags and interference by external forces during the recent nationwide peaceful protests in Nigeria.
In a statement in Sokoto on Saturday, the group said that such actions undermined Nigeria’s sovereignty and the democratic rights of its citizens.
The statement, signed by Mustapha Buda, the SYPM Coordinator, emphasised that the display of foreign flags during the peaceful protests confirmed the group’s concerns.
“In any thriving democracy, the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental pillar that empowers citizens to voice their concerns and hold their leaders accountable.
“For Nigerians, this right is enshrined in the constitution and reflects our commitment to democratic values and freedoms.
“Peaceful protest is not merely a right but a vital expression of our collective will and an essential mechanism for societal progress.
“It also allows us to address grievances and foster dialogue within a framework of respect and non-violence,” Buda said.
The group called on the government to urgently identify and prosecute the foreign individuals and organisations involved in these destabilizing activities.
“It is crucial to condemn the activities of foreign governments and hold foreign agents accountable, particularly those actively working against Nigeria’s stability and sovereignty.
“The government must formally address this issue with the countries whose nationals were involved in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
“It is essential to send a clear message to the international community that Nigeria will not tolerate foreign interference in its internal matters,” he demanded.
SYPM reiterated its belief that Nigeria as a sovereign nation with the right to manage its own affairs without external pressure or interference.
The group oioined that the recent protests demonstrated the strength and unity of Nigerians.
“It is imperative that we protect this democratic spirit from being undermined by foreign influences.
“The SYPM stands firm in our commitment to a stable, secure, and self-determined Nigeria.
“We urge all citizens and leaders to remain vigilant and united in the face of any attempts to disrupt our national integrity,” the group urged.
