Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners have called on the Federal Government to pay the six-month wage award of N25,000 monthly owed them.
This call was made by the head of information of NUP, Bunmi Ogunkolade, in an interview on Monday, August 19, 2024.
Mr Ogunkolade said the Nigerian government was yet to implement the N25,000 wage award announced for pensioners in 2023.
He alleged that while workers have continued to enjoy their N35,000 for six months, not one pensioner has received the wage award.
“So, what did the pensioners do wrong?’’ he asked
Mr Ogunkolade further commended President Bola Tinubu over the approval of the N70,000 minimum wage. He also urged the president to ensure that pensioners are not excluded in its implementation.
He said it is worrisome that some pensioners were still receiving pittance, as low as N2000 since their retirement retired 15 years back.
He urged state governors to implement the directive of 33.4 percent increments of 2010, as well as the regular increment of 2015 and 2019 consequential adjustments.
