Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has described his long-running battle with Cristiano Ronaldo as “a beautiful sporting rivalry,” while reflecting on one of football’s most iconic eras.

Speaking about their years competing at the highest level, Messi said the rivalry was fuelled by ambition and competition rather than personal differences.

The two superstars dominated world football for over a decade while representing FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, turning every El Clásico encounter into a global spectacle.

As reported by Frabrizio Romano on X on Friday, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was quoted as saying,  “It’s something natural in football,” Messi said. I was at Barcelona and he was at Real Madrid, and we were competing for everything both collectively and individually.

“But our relationship was always good and respectful, and everything that happened was purely athletic. There was nothing personal. We didn’t meet often except at matches or award ceremonies, and we were always on good terms. Now we’re at different stages in our lives, but what happened was a beautiful sporting rivalry.”

Messi noted that constant comparisons between them became inevitable as both players continued breaking records and winning major trophies year after year.

However, the Argentine captain emphasised that their relationship always remained respectful despite the fierce competition on the pitch.

The rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo produced countless memorable moments in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, with both players widely considered among the greatest footballers of all time.

Now in different phases of their careers, Messi says he looks back at that era with pride and appreciation, calling it a period that helped define modern football.
