Celestine Omehia, a former governor of Rivers, has called on political stakeholders to respect the rights of Rivers residents to vote in the upcoming local government elections.

“Those who do not want the election to hold are not interested in the welfare of Rivers people,” Mr Omehia said.

The former governor made the comment when he and other members of the Rivers Political Elders and Leaders Forum paid a group visit to Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the Rivers capital of Port Harcourt.

The political leaders urged residents of the state to exercise their civil rights without fear during the Saturday’s local government council election.

Mr Omehia said that the essence of the visit was to encourage the governor to remain steadfast towards ensuring a successful council poll.

He said the election was an exercise of the fundamental right of people saying, “every resident of the state has the right to vote and should express such right.”

He said it was the state’s responsibility to organise the local government elections, adding that his group was “interested in strengthening democratic principles, we want the state to grow in unity.”

Mr Omehia said that past leaders of the state would be delighted to see that the state enjoyed peace, unity and development.
