The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Saturday, October 5, 2024, cautioned players and officials of Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin against drug abuse.
Speaking during a sensitisation programme for the players in Ilorin, Fatimoh Popoola, NDLEA’s Kwara Commander, highlighted the risks of abuse to include infertility, cardiovascular diseases and premature death.
She emphasised the fact that drug experimentation often leads to abuse.
“I urged you to avoid self-medication and consult the team doctor for any medical needs because discipline and diligence are key traits of responsible athletes,” Ms Popoola said.
In his remarks, Bashir Badawiy, the club’s General Manager, commended the NDLEA for partnering with the club on the issue.
He stated that the seminar provided valuable insight into drug regulations.
Also, Veteran broadcaster and Olympian, Hammed Adio, in his goodwill message called for a partnership between Kwara Sports Commission and NDLEA to raise awareness about drug abuse among athletes.
He encouraged Kwara United players to engage in extra training, drawing inspiration from sports legends like Rashidi Yekini and Muda Lawal as a way to stay focused and avoid social ills.
The highlights of the event included an exchange of souvenirs between Kwara United and NDLEA.
The NDLEA also announced Mr Badawiy as a Kwara NDLEA ambassador and he was decorated with the agency’s badge.
