State authorities have issued a swift ban on “after-party” and “hot challenge” activities at wedding ceremonies and social venues across Kano, citing the need to uphold local cultural and religious standards.
Event centres, masters of ceremonies (MCs), and event planners have been ordered to comply with immediate effect or face legal sanctions, according to a statement released on Saturday by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sulaiman.
Speaking on behalf of the Kano State Censorship Board, Executive Secretary Abba El-Mustapha explained that the directive forms part of broader regulatory measures targeting social gatherings. The board noted that these trends represent a growing Western cultural influence that directly conflicts with the state’s heritage.
“Consequently, the board has suspended the practice in order to safeguard the cultural, moral and religious values of the people of Kano State,” the statement read.
While cracking down on unapproved practices, officials emphasised that constructive entertainment is still welcomed at celebrations, provided it aligns with ethical standards and religious teachings. The board reiterated its core mandate to sanitise the local entertainment sector while preserving the role of responsible social festivities.
Members of the public have been urged to assist enforcement efforts by promptly reporting any venues or MCs hosting the prohibited activities within the state.
