The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially validated Senator Sandy Onor as the legitimate presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 general election.
By publishing the final candidate list, the electoral umpire confirmed Onor alongside his running mate, Babangida Umar, confirming the nomination processed through INEC’s electronic portal by the leadership faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
The validation formally blocks the alternative presidential bid launched by a rival PDP faction led by former Minister Tanimu Turaki, which had adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan. The rival group’s manual submission of candidate credentials was rejected due to strict adherence to statutory electronic portal rules, effectively ending Jonathan’s potential return under the PDP banner.
The ruling solidifies the authority of the Wike-aligned executive as the sole recognised leadership of the country’s main opposition party. Speaking following the announcement, National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed declared that official validation had “effectively laid to rest” months of sustained campaign rhetoric intended to destabilize the party.
With the candidacy dispute settled, the PDP leadership has pivoted toward consolidation, appealing to aggrieved members to return to the fold and welcoming recent defectors in a bid to present a unified front for the 2027 poll.
