Around 10,000 runners from Nigeria, West Africa, and East Africa are expected to gather in the Rivers State capital on 14 November 2026 for a 21-kilometre international half-marathon, organisers have announced.
The upcoming event represents a significant expansion for the marathon, which had previously catered primarily to domestic participants during its 10-year history. Officials confirmed at a press conference on Monday that the tenth anniversary edition has been rebranded as the Port Harcourt International Marathon, operating under the flagship theme, “Green Race.”
Marathon official Diri Dikibujuri explained that the title “Green Race” reflects the city’s legacy as Nigeria’s “Garden City” while promoting broader sustainability goals. “The word ‘race’ goes beyond athletics or sports. It signifies humanity running towards a better life, impact and sustainability,” Dikibujuri said, adding that the event aims at “taking Port Harcourt to the world by building an initiative that delivers multidimensional impact.” She noted that pre- and post-race activities will align with international Sustainable Development Goals to foster environmental advocacy and youth development.
Convener of the marathon, Goodluck Azunwena, stated that the projection to double participant capacity to 10,000 registered runners follows surging interest across the region. He assured the public that comprehensive security arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth event.
Backed by the Rivers State Government alongside private sector partners, the 2026 race is designed to showcase local culture, boost tourism, and encourage healthy living.
Describing the milestone edition as a springboard for regional unity and economic visibility, Azunwena remarked: “As we celebrate a decade of purpose, we are proud to officially reopen this chapter of our journey, driven by renewed energy and an even bigger vision, beginning with the Port Harcourt International Marathon taking place on November 14.”
