It’s disturbing, Peter Obi reacts to incessant building collapse after Abuja incident

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has condemned the incessant collapse of buildings across Nigeria.

Mr Obi’s condemnation follows the recent collapse of a building in the Sabon Lugbe area of Abuja on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

Recall that reports had pegged the number of victims trapped under the rubble of the building collapse at 40.

Reacting in a post shared on X, the former Anambra state governor said the frequency of building collapse in the country has become very disturbing and worrisome and calls for national attention.

In the post which he shared on Monday, October 28, 2024, Mr Obi said he learned that residents and emergency workers were already on the ground since the incident occurred yesterday, helping with first response and rescue efforts.

He urged the government to intensify efforts and ensure the safe and complete rescue of all the affected victims. 

He said, “Beyond the rescue efforts, the relevant agencies need to investigate extensively into the factors surrounding the building collapse, to forestall future occurrences.

“Specifically, we need to review and reinforce our building codes and regulations and ensure that there is strict enforcement of rules and regulations all over the country.

“There is a need to arrest and prosecute all erring builders, engineers and supervisors whose negligence leads to building collapses,” Mr Obi added.

He also commiserated with the families and relatives of those trapped.

“I pray that every one of them is safely rescued and reunited back to their families,” he posted.
