The Nigerian Army donated clothing materials to 400 vulnerable children in Zamfara on Saturday as part of its 161st anniversary celebrations.

According to reports, the Army also provided medical supplies to public health facilities and educational materials to public schools across the state.

Brig.-Gen. Sani Ahmed, Commander of the 1 Brigade Command of the Nigerian Army, Gusau, announced the donations during a brief ceremony at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau.

“We celebrate the Nigerian Army anniversary every July 6,” Ahmed said. “On this day, we engage in activities to foster military-civilian relationships.”

He added, “For the 2024 Nigerian Army’s 161st anniversary, we have extended our efforts beyond just medical outreach. We are also providing writing materials to 11 public primary and secondary schools in Gusau, medical consumables to health facilities across the 14 Local Government Areas of the state, and clothing materials to 400 vulnerable boys and girls, including orphans and less-privileged children.”

Each child received a set of clothes and a pair of shoes as part of the Army’s initiative to improve their welfare and alleviate economic hardships.

Ahmed, who also serves as Commander of Sector 2, Joint Task Force Operation Hadarin Daji in North West Nigeria, urged residents to support military and security efforts against banditry.

“One of the major challenges we face in combating banditry is the presence of informants who alert the bandits about our activities,” he said. “I call on the people to stop providing information to bandits and to encourage them to surrender their weapons.”

Ahmed emphasized the importance of community cooperation in the fight against banditry, urging parents and guardians to educate their children on the significance of not leaking information to informants.
