Political tensions have surged in Osun State following the arrest of the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaiye, alongside five others during police operations targeting alleged vote-buying ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed that officers raided Igbalaiye’s Osogbo residence based on credible intelligence, recovering ₦4.81 million, a voter register, two Permanent Voter Cards, and materials suspected to be linked to electoral malpractice. Police authorities insisted the operation was conducted in accordance with the law, dismissing claims of widespread crackdowns and confirming that only six individuals remain in custody as investigations continue.
However, the state government and the Adeleke Campaign Organisation strongly rejected the arrests, accusing law enforcement of executing politically motivated raids without search warrants to intimidate opposition figures. The campaign organisation further alleged that dozens of supporters had been unlawfully detained.
In a defiant response published on his official X handle on Thursday, Osun State Governor and Accord Party governorship candidate, Ademola Adeleke, assured citizens that voters would resist any attempts to subvert the democratic process.
“Throughout history of Osun State, our people have never bowed to intimidation. We are resilient, determined, and fiercely protective of our rights.
“As we approach the August 15 governorship election, I have absolute confidence that no amount of external interference or intimidation can override the collective will of the people of Osun State. The verdict of the people will prevail,” he wrote.
Expressing confidence in his re-election prospects, Adeleke pointed to private polling data indicating strong public support, citing his administration’s performance across infrastructure, education, healthcare, civil service welfare, and pension reforms.
“Independent polls consistently point to a clear and decisive victory for Accord Party because the people can see and feel the impact of our administration. From infrastructure and education to healthcare, workers’ welfare, and pension reforms, our record speaks for itself.
“By the grace of God and with the continued support of the good people of Osun, our second term will build on these achievements and deliver even greater progress for every community. The best days of Osun are still ahead.”
Urging supporters to remain focused as election day approaches, the governor concluded:
“Let’s remain united and vigilant. Vote Accord and be prepared to defend your votes.”
